Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born Robin Alan Thicke on March 10, 1977, in Los Angeles, California, he entered the world with a distinct advantage: famous parents. His mother, Gloria Loring, is a well-known actress and singer, famous for her role on the daytime drama “Days of Our Lives.” His father, Alan Thicke, was a beloved actor, most notably recognized for his role in the sitcom “Growing Pains.” The separation of his parents when he was seven years old and the presence of an older brother and a younger half-brother shaped his upbringing.

From a young age, Thicke’s parents supported his passion for music. However, his father initially hesitated to fund a professional demo tape for Thicke and his music group, As One, preferring his son to focus on his studies. This initial hurdle was overcome when Al Jarreau, a jazz vocalist and the uncle of a group member, provided the necessary funds, investing $1,000 for the demo tape.

The demo tape eventually found its way to R&B artist Brian McKnight, who was impressed by Thicke’s talent and signed him to his production company. Thicke contributed his songwriting skills to McKnight, co-writing the song “Anyway” for McKnight’s second album. McKnight further introduced Thicke to Jimmy Iovine, leading to a recording contract with Interscope Records at the young age of 16, marking the beginning of his professional music career.

Music Career

By the age of 17, Thicke had moved out on his own, supporting himself through his work as a professional record producer and songwriter. During this early period, he wrote songs for various artists, including Brandy, Jordan Knight, Christina Aguilera, and Mya. During this period, he performed under the surname “Thicke”, continuing this professional identity until 2005.

After his initial deal with Interscope, Thicke briefly collaborated with Epic Records before returning to Interscope, this time under Kenneth “Babyface” Edwards’s Nu America imprint. His debut single, “When I Get You Alone” (2002), achieved chart success in Australia, reaching the Top 20, and performed well in New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Italy. This moderate success led to the release of his debut album, “A Beautiful World” (2003). The album, however, failed to meet performance expectations, peaking at No. 152 on the Billboard 200 chart. Despite this, several artists, like Usher and Mary J. Blige, expressed interest in collaborating with him.

Interscope Records was hesitant about Thicke’s ability to sell albums, which led to delays in his second album due to financial and creative disagreements. However, Pharrell Williams, impressed by Thicke’s talent, signed him to his record label Star Trak in 2005, which had a distribution deal with Interscope. Thicke’s second album, “The Evolution of Robin Thicke,” was released in October 2006, featuring the single “Lost Without U,” which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was later certified Platinum by the RIAA, with domestic sales exceeding 1.5 million copies.

In 2007, Thicke was the opening act for the North American leg of Beyoncé’s “The Beyoncé Experience” tour. His third album, “Something Else,” released in September 2008, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. His fourth album, “Sex Therapy,” followed in December 2009 and included collaborations with artists such as Estelle, Snoop Dogg, and Nicki Minaj.

Thicke released his fifth studio album, “Love After War,” in December 2011, which debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. He followed this with his sixth studio album, “Blurred Lines,” in July 2013. The lead single from this album, also titled “Blurred Lines,” was released in March 2013 and featured T.I. and Pharrell Williams.

His seventh album, “Paula” (2014), was dedicated to his estranged wife, Paula Patton, reflecting a personal and emotional period in his life.

Blurred Lines Lawsuit

Shortly after the release of “Blurred Lines,” the estate of Marvin Gaye filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Robin Thicke and his co-writer/producer, Pharrell Williams. The lawsuit alleged similarities between “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up.” Court filings indicated that “Blurred Lines” generated a total of $16,675,690 in profits, surpassing any other song released in 2013.

Of these profits, $5,658,214 was paid to Robin Thicke, $5,153,457 to Pharrell Williams, and $704,774 to rapper T.I. The remaining $5,159,245 was distributed among three different record companies. In 2015, a judge ordered Thicke and Williams to pay $7 million, which was later reduced to $5 million.

Other Projects and Appearances

Beyond his music career, Thicke has also ventured into acting and television. His feature film debut was in “Making the Rules” (2014), filmed in 2012 under the title “Abby in the Summer.” He has appeared in numerous music-related television programs, including a judging role on the ABC show “Duets” in May 2012, alongside John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, and Kelly Clarkson.
