Sean Michael Coulthard, now famously known as Michael Cole, was born on December 8, 1966, in Syracuse, New York. Cole’s pursuit of higher education led him to Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, a renowned institution for aspiring media professionals. Journalism Career

Professional Wrestling Career
In 1997, Michael Cole transitioned to the world of professional wrestling, joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), later renamed WWE. He started his career with the organization by providing voiceovers for promotional videos. Cole’s onscreen debut came in June 1997, appearing on an episode of “Raw is War.” He swiftly moved up the ranks, replacing Todd Pettengill as a backstage interviewer. By the end of 1997, Cole had become one of the three announcers during the first hour of “Monday Night Raw,” alongside Kevin Kelly and Jim Ross. After a brief hiatus, Cole returned as the regular play-by-play announcer for “Raw is War.” This role further cemented his presence in the wrestling world. In 1999, Cole became the play-by-play announcer for WWF’s new SmackDown program. With the WWE brand extension, Cole worked exclusively for the SmackDown brand, becoming a familiar voice for the show’s audience. While not heavily involved in in-ring action, Cole had brief storyline roles with wrestlers such as Heidenreich, Vito, and D-Generation X. In the 2008 WWE Draft, Cole was drafted back to the Raw brand, ending his time as a play-by-play commentator for SmackDown. He also made his in-ring debut, teaming with Jerry Lawler against Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. In 2010, Cole took on the role of lead commentator on the new show “WWE NXT,” remaining in that position for the program’s first three seasons. During this time, he embraced a heel persona for the first time in his WWE career. That year, Cole began a memorable feud with Jerry Lawler, adding another dimension to his on-screen presence. In 2019, Michael Cole returned to the SmackDown brand as a full-time commentator. There, he joined Renee Young and Corey Graves at the announce table. In 2021, Pat McAfee became his commentary partner. When McAfee took breaks, Wade Barrett filled in. In the summer of 2023, Cole returned to the Raw brand as a commentator alongside Wade Barrett, while continuing to work on SmackDown.

Michael Cole has been married to his wife, Yolanda, since 1987. They have two sons. Outside of the wrestling world, Cole is a fan of the New York Jets, New York Mets, and Boston Celtics, showcasing his interests in sports beyond WWE.
